Live the Dream!

With the excitement of the Triple Crown, many fans think about the prospects of horse ownership. It can be an expensive venture. There are horses in the Kentucky Derby that were purchased for $300,000 or more. Even the winner of the Derby who was considered a bargain was more expensive than an average person might think. His mom was a $8,000 mare and the stud fee was reported at $2,500. Then there were the expenses of preparing the mare for breeding, the actual breeding process, the birth, and two years of training for the young colt. When all is said and done, their venture surely cost them in excess of $35,000. Considering the outcome, it was a great investment. This however may not really be within reach of the average fan.

To enjoy the excitement of horse racing and horse ownership, there are other alternatives. Most thoroughbred horses run in claiming races and it’s a good start for a new horse owner. In the state of Arizona, if an owner owns more than 10% of a horse, it is necessary to have a racing license. However, it is possible to get into a partnership and own 10% or less of a horse which does not require individual licenses of the partners. The general partner or the partnership itself holds the racing licenses necessary to race.

Currently, we have a partnership known as Pony Express Racing, LLC. We claimed our first horse, named Atticus Ghost. She will be racing at Sunray Park on Saturday, May 10 under the licenses of the general partners and trainer. Atticus Ghost is the 3-1 favorite in the 7th race. We are hoping for a good trip and a win.

We plan to claim two more horses in late August or early September. It is our plan to claim these horses in California at a claiming price of between $5000 and $8000.

If an individual is interested in a 5% share of one of these horses, the initial cost would range from $250 to $400 per share. Since we will be hauling the horses to Phoenix, AZ for the 2014-2015 racing season, there is an initial cost for hauling of $500 per horse or $25 per share.

Just imagine, you can have a piece of the action for as little as $275 to start and you can say, that’s my horse when he reaches the Winner’s Circle. The excitement is beyond anything I can describe.

This is just a preview of what we have in mind for Pony Express Racing, LLC. If you think this might be something to try, be sure to leave me a comment or contact us at horseplay0502@gmail.com and we will be happy to send you more information about our racing team.
